Chapter Nine

Lucas and Rusty pulled through the gates of the Rocking C in Rusty’s truck right on time to meet with the potential sponsor Mr. Campbell had set up. He was thrilled when Lucas had volunteered to drive him out there. The support was a welcome addition. Nerves wracked his body, making his heart race, his breathing rapid and shallow, and his palms sweaty. This could mean the end to his career or the beginning of a beautiful time in his life, and he was scared to death.

The Rocking C was a huge ranch spanning several thousands of acres on the outskirts of Albuquerque. The white ranch house standing off in the distance put his own small place to shame, with its long winding porch wrapped all the way around the front, the manicured gardens off to the left, the huge fenced pastures in front, and the ginormous barn in the distance. Rusty was in awe at the grandeur around him. This was what he wanted someday.

As they pulled up to the front of the house, Mr. Campbell came down the long steps to greet them.

“Rusty. It’s great to see you again. How have you been? How’s the leg?” he asked after they’d opened the truck’s door and stepped out.

“Hi, Mr. Campbell. I’m doin’ fine. The leg is all healed and I’m ready to ride when the season starts next week.”

“What the hell happened to your face?”

“I got in a bit of a brawl at one of the bars. I’m fine though.”

“Glad to hear it. You look pretty banged up. I know that break was a hard one on you, but you’ve done amazing getting all healed up.” Mr. Campbell turned to face Lucas. “You must be Lucas Jacks. I’ve heard a lot about you on the circuit as well. You are a great up and coming rider. A few more years of experience under your belt, and you’ll be in the same league as Rusty.”

Lucas frowned as he shook Mr. Campbell’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you, sir.”

Rusty could tell Lucas held back what he really wanted to say. Mr. Campbell’s remark was a cut to Lucas since he’d been riding almost as long as Rusty had.

Mr. Campbell slapped Rusty on the back and guided him up the stairs toward the front door of the house. “You must have been practicing recently, Rusty. You look like you got the wrong end of a ride there, son.”

“Yeah, I did. I’ve been out to a riding school outside of town, doing some practice rides.”

“I’m sure they aren’t as rank as my bulls, but I bet it gave you some good practice.”

“Yes, sir, they did. They were very nice out there, letting me get on some of their bulls.”

“Very good, but I bet you’re ready to ride some of mine.”

“Oh yes, sir, I sure am.”

“Good, good.”

They walked through the front door and Rusty was in awe. The entryway had white marble on the floor with black etchings depicting the Rocking C brand right into the floor.
